OpenGeo is a project which functions as a campane that saw its first debut on the 1st of July 2025, this project aims to make OpenStreetMap and other open-source mapping services a great alternative to Google Maps and other close-source mapping services.

  • Editing the map using local knowledge and satellite imagery.
  • Collaborating with the OpenStreetMap Romania community and others as such to ensure accurate information.
  • Helping others with navigation trough the world.

Understanding the project

Context

Google Maps and other close-source mapping services nowadays are accepting incorect information, or have outdated that can't be updated. So, because OpenStreetMap is the only mapping service that is open for editing and accepts edits without verification, and it's the only service that has a active community which is on the lookout for griefing and other things like that.

Methodology

The project's abordation goes as follows:

  1. Searching and evaluating of a location: When a location with outdated or non-existent information is founded it will be put on a scale of 1 - 10 of how bad is the saturation.
  2. Sourcing the information needed: Once the location has been identified/selected, the search for information about it begins. This can be done through local knowledge, surveys, government data, etc.
  3. Editing the map: When there is concrete information about the location in question, starts the editing of the map.
  4. Uploading the edit: Once the edit is completed, it is uploaded to the OpenStreetMap database, where it can be pulled by services like Bing Maps.
